November 27, 2004: 1st National Summit for Choral Music (NSCM)    Sponsored by the Junior Philippine Conductors Association (JPCA) and the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club (ACGC), the first National Summit for Choral Music in the Philippines was held on Saturday, 27 November 2004 at the Ateneo de Manila University. The whole day summit gave Philippine conductors the rare opportunity to voice their concerns and to find ways to address them on both a national and local level. The primary solution proposed was the creation of a national organization for choral conductors.

65 participants from different parts of the country attended. The summit had two key results: first, a core group of conductors representing different regions of the Philippines was constituted to work towards the formation of the national organization for choral conductors. Second, after a lengthy deliberation process, the participants decided on the mission, vision, and goals of the national organization.

Guest speakers at the summit were: Jean Claude Wilkens, Secretary General of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM); Thomas Schüle, Director of the Choral Olympics; Jonathan Velasco, former Conductor of the World Youth Choir (WYC); Janet Sabas-Aracama, Chairperson of the University of the Philippines College of Music Conducting Department; Eudenice Palaruan, Principal Conductor of the San Miguel Master Chorale; and Elaine Aliga, member of the World Youth Choir 2004.

The summit was followed by a fellowship dinner and concert, featuring the University of the East Chorale, the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus, the Philippine Children’s Chorus from Mandaluyong, and the Ateneo Chamber Singers.

The event was organized by Onyl Torres (JPCA President), Gids Bendicion (ACGC Assistant Conductor), and Jojo Velasco (WYC Alumnus and Guest Conductor/IFCM Consultant).

May 20-21, 2005: 2nd National Summit for Choral Music (NSCM)

The 2nd Summit for Choral Music was held in Capitol University, Cagayan de Oro. The two-day summit gathered over 50 choral conductors and music leaders from Mindanao and one from Visayas. After a day of focus group discussions and open fora, the summit delivered these key results for the Philippine Choral Directors Association:
  1. the formation of a Mindanao-based coregroup, which represents the various regions of Mindanao and with which the Luzon-based coregroup will correspond.
  2. the appointment of a Mindanao coordinator, a dean of a local music school, who will facilitate information sharing between Luzon and Mindanao
  3. the ratification of the mission, vision, objectives, and key results areas of the PCDA as proposed by the Luzon coregroup
  4. the creation of a preliminary directory of choral conductors in Mindanao 5. the creation of a seed-fund, donated by the participants. Amount is P4,000.00
The summit also helped the participants in that they were given an opportunity to discuss their problems and find creative ways to help each other. In fact, the Davao representatives decided to form their own Davao-wide organization, under the umbrella organization of the PCDA, to meet the specific needs of Davao conductors.   The second day of the summit was devoted to conducting and choir management workshops.

November 19 to 22, 2009: 2nd National Masterclass Series for Choral Conductors/Regional Convention for Visayas and Mindanao

At the University of the Visayas, various classes on choral conducting, vocal methods, choral arrangement, score reading and analysis, as well as basic theater movement were presented by known personalities from the Philippine choral scene. Among those present were Ms. Anna Abeleda-Piquero and Mr. Arwin Tan. Both are international jurors and choral clinicians, PCDA Board Members; and themselves conductors of highly-praised choirs (The University of the Visayas and University of the East Chorales; Novo Concertante, respectively). Other prominent lecturers included Mr. Edgardo Manguiat, conductor of the University of the Philippines Singing Ambassadors (UPSA); and renowned pedagogue and composer, Mr. Eudenice Palaruan. Acclaimed thespian, Mr. Leonyl Torres also contributed his expertise in the theater arts. All these classes ranged from the theoretical, to the pragmatic, and even to the amusing; merged in a schoolroom-like experience that was enriching and unforgettable for both speakers and participants.

Participants were indulged even further with performances from an assortment of choirs. Each with its own unique sonic qualities and artistic sensibilities, these groups fittingly capped each lecture-filled day, making tangible for participants concepts and views that have been shared. Aptly entitled, “A Choral Celebration”, choirs included The Voice of Cebu (conducted by Mr. Jesson Albatan); The Mandaue Children’s Choir and Cebu Chamber Singers (conducted by Mr. Dennis Sugarol); The Loboc Children’s Choir (conducted by Ms. Alma Fernando-Taldo); and The University of the Visayas and University of the East Chorales (conducted by Ms. Anna Abeleda-Piquero).
